August 2022 has been a relatively good month for the 10 Spirits Invest Indexes. We have five Japanese, two Scotch whisky indexes, one rum and one gin index. Seven indexes increased in their base currency British GBP. All five Japanese whisky indexes have climbed. The Spirits Invest Brora Rare Malts Series Whisky, the Spirits Invest Laphroaig Ian Hunter Story Books Whisky and the Spirits Invest Ki Noh Bi Gin index were in the red territory this month.
Spirits Invest currently supports 15 different currencies. For many spirits investors who must convert the GBP back to their home currency, August 2022 was not a month to talk about at birthday parties. 12 currencies strengthened against the GBP. Especially the American (USD) and the Hong Kong dollar (HKD), since these are pegged to each other, were not happy that their home currency strengthened so much against the British sterling. Russian investors saw the strongest increase against the GBP. The Russian ruble received more demand due to month-end taxes that usually prompt export-focused companies to increase conversion of their foreign currency revenues to meet local duties1 . For instance, the Spirits Invest Hanyu Card Series Whisky Index added +1.0% this month in GBP, whereas American and Russian investors experienced a loss of -2.7% and -5.0% respectively due to exchange rates movements.
